Confirmation
“But continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…” (II Peter 3:18)
In the Sacrament of Confirmation, we become more perfectly bound with the church and are enriched with the special strength of the Holy Spirit.
Before Jesus was crucified, He promised His followers He would send His Spirit to comfort and strengthen them. True to His promise, on Pentecost, forty days after His resurrection from the dead, the Holy Spirit descended upon His followers. The Sacrament of Confirmation is our own Pentecost because when we are confirmed, we receive the Holy Spirit, through the anointing with oil and the laying on of hands by the bishop or priest appointed by him.
When we receive this sacred seal we show that we belong to God. The prophets, kings and priests of the Old Testament were elevated to a special position in their service of God when they were anointed. We, too, become part of the priesthood of all believers, witnesses to Christ and heirs to His throne when we are anointed with the holy oil on our foreheads.
