Level 8
Religious Education Curriculum
Church of Saint Katharine Drexel
Theme: Living Our Faith in the Church and the World
In Level 8, our Religious Education program focuses on helping students understand their role in the life of the Church, deepen their commitment to Christian moral living, and grow in their personal relationship with God through prayer. As our young adolescents prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, this curriculum supports their journey toward mature Catholic faith and active discipleship.
Part I: Church History – The Journey of the Catholic Church
Theme: Jesus’ life and mission continue through the Church—God’s people—guided by the Holy Spirit to be a sign of His Kingdom in the world.
Objectives:
- To deepen students’ understanding of how the Church has grown and responded to challenges throughout history.
- To inspire a greater appreciation for the saints, Church leaders, and faithful communities who have lived the Gospel across centuries.
- To encourage active participation in the Church’s mission today, both in parish life and in service to others.
Part II: Morality – The Journey in Christian Living
Theme: A personal relationship with Jesus helps us understand who we are and how God calls us to live. Catholic morality helps guide our everyday choices in light of our faith.
Objectives:
- To help students understand the moral responsibilities that flow from their identity as followers of Jesus.
- To teach the role of conscience and how to form it according to Church teaching.
- To introduce basic principles of Catholic morality and provide tools for making good, faith-based decisions.
- To help students recognize the role of the Holy Spirit, and the guidance of the Church community, in living a moral and faithful life.
Part III: Prayer – The Journey in Friendship with God
Theme: Prayer helps us become aware of God's presence and is our response to His love. It strengthens our friendship with God and shapes our daily lives.
Objectives:
- To nurture a desire for prayer as a vital part of a growing faith life.
- To introduce a variety of Catholic prayer forms—such as spontaneous prayer, traditional prayers, meditation, and liturgical prayer—to help students discover how they best connect with God.
- To provide opportunities for personal and communal prayer as part of regular classroom life.
This final year of formal religious education in preparation for Confirmation is a significant step in each young person’s spiritual journey. It is a time to deepen their relationship with God, to claim their faith as their own, and to prepare to live it boldly in the world as full members of the Catholic Church.
